Clifford E. Hoenk

Clifford E. Hoenk, 74, of Cherokee Village, Ark., formerly of South Bend; died at 10 a.m. Sunday in Goshen, N.Y., after an illness of four days. Hoenk was a former life insurance agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.
Born on April 3, 1909, in Terre Haute, Ind., he lived in South Bend for 55 years. On Feb. 26, 1946, in Terre Haute, he married the former Mary White who died July 13, 1982. He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Constance Shapiro of Ithaca, N.Y.; two sons, Alan N. of: Iowa City, Iowa, and Robert H. of South Bend; five grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Hoenk of Naples, Fla.
In 1973, Hoenk received ti the Herbert Cramer Award as Life Underwriter of the Year, after receiving recognition for winning the industry's National Quality Award for 25 years consecutive service. He served as director of the Special Agents Association of Northwestern Mutual. He was chairman of the Individual Gifts Division for the United Fund drive in 1961. He was active in that organization's campaigns for many years.
A World War II veteran, serving with the U. S. Navy for six years, he was assigned to the crew of the Munargo, touring from Greenland to Scotland, and later serving in the Pacific and then at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Forbes, pastor, officiating. Cremation has taken place. He was on the board of directors of the St. Joseph County Scholarship Foundation, a member of First Presbyterian Church, Camp Millhouse, United Way, Million Dollar Roundtable, South Bend Estate Planning Council, South Bend Association of Life Underwriters and the South Bend Country Club. He attended the University of Notre Dame and DePauw University.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Council for the Retarded of St. Joseph County.
