Donald M. Kuehl

ELKHART Donald M. Kuehl, 90, of 3109 E. Bristol Street, Elkhart, Ind., died at 4:07 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, at home. Mr. Kuehl was born on Nov. 14, 1908, in South Bend, Ind., and graduated in 1923 from Central High School in South Bend. He married Cecilia Abraham on Jan. 27, 1934, in Mishawaka, Ind., and she died on April 15, 1988. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard W. and Russel C.
He is survived by a daughter, JoAnn E. (Gary) Williams of Birmingham, Mich.; a son, William C. of Elkhart; two grandchildren; and by a brother, Robert O. of South Bend.
Mr. Kuehl was the circulation manager for 37 years at the South Bend Tribune, retiring in 1969, and worked for 10 years with Don Best Realty Company.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at HartzlerGutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. The services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Richard Kallenberg officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. In 1952,
Mr. Kuehl and his late wife, along with several other familes, organized the Council for Retarded Children, now known as ADEC. They also helped start Sheltered Workshop Inc., which is now ADEC Industries. Don was a member of the Elkhart Lions Club for over 57 years, having perfect attendance for over 40 years. He held virtually every office including President and District Governor. He was one of the founding fathers of the Banquet with the Blind.
Don was a Lions "Privileged Pioneer" and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in both 1991 and 1994. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Kane Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Shrine, Elks Lodge 425 and the Indiana Society of Chicago. He was chosen in 1956 as a "typical stockholder" and spent a week in New York City as a guest of the New York Stock Exchange.
