Herbert Eugene Crouse, 67, of 811 E. Colfax, died at 6 a.m. Thursday in his home after a brief illness. He taught string bass and repaired string instruments.

Born on June 10, 1910, in Perry, Iowa, he had lived here 50 years, coming from South Dakota.

Surviving are a brother, George W. of Nashville, Tenn., and three nieces.

Services were to be at 9:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph Catholic Church, of which Crouse was a member. Rey. Paul Wendel, C.S.C., pastor, was to officiate. Burial was to be in Riverview Cemetery.

Crouse had been a member and the principal bass player for the South Bend Symphony since its inception. He was the founder and a performer with /the Twin Cities Band. He also was a member and past secretarytreasurer of the American Federation of Musicians
