William F. Zielinski

SOUTH BEND William Zielinski, 79, died following lengthy illness at 4:58 p.m. Nov. 28, in Memorial Hospital. He was born in South Bend, Ind., on Feb. 12, 1918, to Stanley and Bernice Zielinski, and was a lifelong resident of this city.
Mr. Zielinski graduated. in 1942 from Indiana University with a B.S. degree in accounting. He began his government career of 32 years as an auditor with the Navy Department, later transferring to the General Accounting office as principal auditor and lecturer. He worked 28 years for the Internal Revenue Service, initially as a field examiner, then as an appellate conferee. Upon retirement in 1974, he was honored with the presentation of the Albert Gallatin award for meritorious service to the Treasury Department. In addition to his employment with the federal government, Mr. Zielinski was a lecturer in accounting at Indiana University at South Bend for several years.
On Feb. 12, 1943, he married Coral June Smith of Mishawaka, Ind. She survives, along with a son, William Bert Zielinski at home; a daughter, Muriel DeCloedt; and two granddaughters, Emily and Allison of Granger, Ind.; and a brother, Bert Zielinski of South Bend. He was preceded in death by a brother, Casimer and a sister, Jane Ast.
Mr. Zielinski was a member of the National Treasury Employees Union and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Services will be in the chapel at 10 a.m. on Monday with burial following at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association.
