Betty Mae Farkas, 79, of 4100 Crescent Drive, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Sioux Valley Hospital of natural causes. Betty Thornburg was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Alhambra, Calif. She grew up in South Bend, Ind., where she graduated from Central Senior High. She Farkas attended South Bend College of Commerce, graduating in 1941.
She worked as a secretary for a law firm in South Bend. She married Frank Farkas on Jan. 31, 1942, in South Bend. She volunteered as a nurse's aid during World War II and helped at the USO. In 1946, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa.
In 1952, they moved to Sioux Falls. She worked as a secretary for the vice president of L.G. Everest. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Boy Scout den mother, honorary lifetime PTA member, Shriners Women's Auxiliary and secretary to O.P.A.
In addition to her husband survivors include three daughters: Kristine Meyn of Cardiff, Md., Linda Ellwein of Sioux Falls and Kelly Larson of Evergreen, Colo.; a son, Frank of Houston; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls, with private burial in Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital, Minneapolis, March of Dimes or the First United Methodist Church.
