SOUTH BEND Paul L. Shumaker, 79, of South Bend,' Ind., passed away after an illness on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 4, in Memorial Hospital. Born on March 11, 1918, in South Bend, to George M. and Ida L. "Leedy" Shumaker, Sr., Mr. Shumaker was a lifelong resident of South Bend.

On June 18, 1950, he married the former Elsie "Betty" Lippincott, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Carol A. Shumaker and husband, E. Thomas Hibbs of South Bend; a son, Duane J. (Kathy) Shumaker of Highland Village, Texas; grandchildren, Nicholas, Allyson and Jessica Shumaker, Keith and Brian Hibbs; a step grandchild, Scott Hibbs; two step great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Jordan Hibbs; a sister, Mary E. Wolf of New Carlisle, Ind.; and by three brothers, Ka D. Shumaker,' George M., Jr., and Mark I., all of South Bend.

Paul retired from The South Bend Tribune in 1983 after working for 43 years in the distribution department. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the church's Men's Club, the Potawatomi Zoological Society, and he was very active in the church's soup kitchen. He served in World War II with the Army.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street. Services will be conducted at 11; a.m. on Monday in the church, and burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church soup kitchen.
