In Memory
Lois Naomi (Shumaker) Nash
May 8, 1919 - Jan 29, 2018
SAINT PAUL, MN - At age 98, Lois N. Nash (Shumaker) stole away peacefully January 29, 2018 at the Sholom East Residence. Born May 8, 1919 in South Bend, IN to Eva and Frank Shumaker, Lois and Jack Nash moved to St. Paul in 1962 when Jack became president of the American National Bank. Having outlived all three of her children, Valerie Glarner, John Nash, and Peggy Greiner and her former husband, Jack, she is now thrilled to be reunited with them, her parents, and her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Evadna and Jerry Claeys.
Lois is survived by her sons-in-law, Terrence W. Glarner and John E. Greiner (Karen); her granddaughter, Kristin Hartley (Grant); her grandsons, Greg Glarner, Jack, Matt (Meghan), Dan, and Tim Greiner; great-granddaughters, Lauren, Valerie, and Caroline Hartley, and Grace Greiner; great-grandsons, Brendan, Elijah, and Tristan Greiner; her sister-in-law, Myra Nash; many Claeys and Nash nieces and nephews, and their families; and the loving Janet Lange Nash family.
A South Bend native (and Notre Dame fan), Lois loved relocating to St. Paul and creating lifelong friendships with the Murphy's, Heimels, Freemans, O'Neills, Burkes, and Goodmans to name a few. Known by nicknames including Loass, Lolo, and Grandma Cash, Lois combined her genuine warmth, a sharp wit, and generosity of spirit to charm and befriend anyone who had the privilege to meet her. Always quick with a joke or a rejoinder, her days were filled with camaraderie, laughter, and love. Having won the 1929 South Bend Marbles Championship as a 10-year-old, Lois enjoyed competing throughout her life at golf, tennis, bridge, gin, poker, and lastly at bingo. A losing effort might elicit an “Oh Psshaw” or a friendly taunt of “You're a dirty word” from her. Lois knew how to have fun and to be fun. She loved people. With the help of her deep faith, she maintained a wonderful outlook all her life and in her twilight days often remarked how lucky she had been.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Sat., Feb. 3 at the Church of St. Cecilia, 2357 Bayless Place, St. Paul, MN 55114 with visitation one hour before Mass. Memorials preferred to The Jeremiah Program or donor's choice.
