Mildred W. (Samuels) Carpenter

Mildred W. Carpenter, 83, of South 31st Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 10:28 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, In Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 20, 1919, in Oswego, Ore., to John and May (Kelly) Samuels.

On March 14, 1942, in South Bend, as Mildred Samuels, she married Reginald D. Carpenter Sr. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her son, Reginald D. Carpenter Jr. in April 1995; a sister, Ruby Vining in 1996; and by a brother, Bud Samuels in 2002.

Mildred and her family enjoyed spending time at their Birch Lake cottage in Vandalia, Mich., for over 50 years. A lifelong resident of this community, Mildred graduated from Central High School in 1937. She loved playing euchre with several area euchre clubs and volunteered as a "rocking grandma" at the neonatal unit of Memorial Hospital. She was a member of T.O.P.S. and of Gospel Center Church. Mildred retired in 1997 from the South Bend Community School System after 27 years of service in the food service department. The school lunch rooms she served were at Edison and Studebaker schools

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Tom Jewell of Indianapolis, Ind., Nancy and Tom Connelly of Webster Groves, Mo., and Janice Melton of Elkhart, Ind.; and by two sons and their wives, William and Ann Carpenter of South Bend, and Richard and Valerie Carpenter of Chicago, Ill.; 15 grandchildren, Tony Jewell, Chris Jewell, Jim (Carolyn) Carpenter, Steve Glen (Anna) Carpenter, Beau Connelly, Juliana Connelly, Jessica Melton, Caley Carpenter, Mary Carpenter, Becca Carpenter, Peter Carpenter, Theresa Carpenter, Eleanor Carpenter and Milo Carpenter; one great-granddaughter, Linda Carpenter; a sister, Helen Rasmussen of Bakersfield, Calif.; and by a brother, Fred Samuels of Mishawaka, Ind.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Barbara Jung of Unity Church of Peace will officiate. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home, and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.
