Alexander Joseph Nemeth Jr.
April 1, 1919 - April 29, 2002
Alex J. "Hunk" Nemeth Jr., 83, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 10:25 p.m. Monday, April 29, in Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Nemeth retired from the St. Joseph County Police Department and from Bendix. Alex served in the Army during World War II and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He was a charter member of V.F.W. #8748.
Mr. Nemeth was born on April 1, 1919, in South Bend, to Alex and Katherine (Torok) Nemeth. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, and by four brothers and two sisters.
On July 2, 1952, in South Bend, he married the former Betty Shreve, who survives.
He is also survived by a brother, Henry Locsmondy of South Bend, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Alex will be well-remembered by family and friends as a sports enthusiast, playing softball for both Studebaker's and the Bendix Corporation, as well as bowling on a league with friends and coworkers. Golf was his passion, and many beautiful mornings began on the golf course. Proudly, he would share being a member of the Indiana High School Hall of Fame for wrestling, and was a great supporter of University of Notre Dame athletics. He will be greatly missed by his family and devoted wife of 50 years, Betty.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
