Elmer loved to hunt and fish. He told a friend that if he could chose the way he was to die, then he wanted to die fishing. On 3 Feb. 1992 Elmer had a heart attack while walking toward an ice fishing hole. Although he was rushed to a hospital in Dowagiac, Mich., where he was pronounced dead, he got his wish.
