SOUTH BEND -Loretta M. Budzinski, 88, of the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, passed away at 3:35 a.m., Friday, February 6, 2009 in St. Paul's. Loretta was born on August 8, 1920 in South Bend to John and Wanda (Chrzanowski) Gembarzewski, and was a lifelong resident. She retired in 1991 after 39 years as a secretary at the University of Notre Dame.
On August 30, 1941, in South Bend, she married Alex E. Budzinski, who preceded her in death on April 2, 1991. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Rita Konkol and Dolores Fritz.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann (Arthur) Roach of Bryan, TX; two sons, John F. (Joanne) Budzinski of East Warwick, RI and Thomas J. (Gail) Budzinski of South Bend, IN; six grandchildren, Arthur J. Roach, III, Katy Mondragon, Kevin Roach, Jeffrey Budzinski, Michael Budzinski, and Daniel Budzinski; and seven great-grandchildren.
Loretta was a member of Holy Cross Parish. She was a former member of the Holy Cross Altar Rosary Society and Harvest House. She was also a former member of the St. John's Retirees Club and a former president of the Ladies of the Knights of Columbus Council #553. Loretta was a den mother for Troop #437 Boy Scouts of America and an adult leader for 3 groups of Campfire Girls at Holy Cross School. She was a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council. Loretta received recognition for "Outstanding and Dedicated Service" on April 1, 2001 from the Adult Literacy Council of St. Joseph County.
