Sergeant Peter Gacki was part of the Field Artillery Forward Observation Team that supported the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, Headquarters Company, 394th Infantry regiment, 99th Infantry Division "Checkerboard", during the fighting at Lanzerath on December 16th, 1944

Peter A. Gacki East Lansing, MI Age 89, died April 13, 2008. Peter was born April 24, 1918, and was raised in South Bend, IN. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the U.S. Army 99th Infantry Division 371st Field Artillery C Battery in Europe, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW receiving the Silver Star.
Peter retired from the U.S. Post Office, East Lansing, after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 5 sisters. Surviving are his wife, Fleta; son, Roger D. (Annette) Gacki of Woodstock, IL; stepdaughters, Ann (Jerry) Lipe Ruby of Jacksonville, FL and Patricia (Rick) Lipe Kobasic of Escanaba, MI; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who loved him very much.
We especially thank his niece, Carol Ellis, and special friend, Mary Ellen Ottarson for their love and support for many years. The family wishes to thank the staffs at Fresenius Medical Services, where Peter had kidney dialysis, East Lansing Health Care Center, Hospice House of Mid-Michigan and Lansing-Mason Ambulance Service for their wonderful care of Peter.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 24, 4:00 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Avenue, East Lansing with the Rev. Dr. Fred Graham, officiating. The family will receive friends at the chapel Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909 or the National Kidney Foundation, 1169 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48108 in memory of Mr. Gacki.
