John R. Fortier, 63, of Washington, Mich., formerly of South Bend, died Thursday in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, after being ill six months. He was employed by the Michigan State Highway Department as an assessor.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1919, in South Bend and graduated from Central High School before moving to Washington 40 years ago.
His wife, Shirley, died on June 7.
He is survived by a son, John B. of Nova Scotia; two grandsons; and three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Scheer, Mrs. George (Maxine) Rumpf and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Rose, all of South Bend.
Prayer services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Diener Funeral Home on Van Dyke Road in Utica, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 1 p.m. at St. Kieran Catholic Church. Rev. Sidney Eckert will officiate. Burial will be White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today in the Diener Funeral Home.
Fortier was a World War II Navy veteran, and a member of Rochester Elks Lodge 2225. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
