John S. Desits

July 11, 1918 – May 2, 2006

John S. Desits, 87, of South Bend, passed away at 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in his residence. John retired from Weyerhauser where he was a shipping manager. He was a World War II Army veteran, a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus #553 , the South Bend Elks #235, and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Mr. Desits was born on July 11, 1918, in South Bend to Emery and Anna (Ternyak) Desits. On December 26, 1945, in South Bend, he married the former Bonnie Kirby who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Beverly (Frank) Bogunia of South Bend and Janet Desits of Mishawaka; two sons, Robert (Shirley) Desits of Mishawaka and Jeffrey (Mary) Desits of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Kimberly (Lloyd) Chadwick, Christine (Todd) Leinenbach, Steve (Diane) Bogunia, Gary (Lindsey) Bogunia, Tracy (Ryan) Lee, Tyler Desits, Gabrielle Desits, and Elizabeth Desits; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Peyton of South Bend; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Darnold; and three brothers, Joseph Desits, Emery Desits Jr. and Steve “James” Desits.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2006, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 Wednesday and from 2 to 3 Thursday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
