Father Alexander Joseph Danowski

Father Alexander Joseph Danowski, age 93, a priest for the Diocese of Pueblo, died July 5, 2011 in Grand Junction, CO.

He was born October 26, 1917 in Gary, IN to Alexander and Antonia (Delikowska) Danowski. Before entering seminary, he served four years in the United States Army and saw action in the Pacific Theater of operations in World War II, being discharged in 1945.

He went on to attend the University of California College of Agriculture and the State Polytechnic College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Following graduation he was employed as a field representative for an agricultural firm.

Father Danowski then completed his philosophy studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1955 and went on to study theology at both Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C. and Regina Cleri Seminary in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1959 at Sacred Heart Church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

His assignments after ordination included assistant at St. Stephen in Glenwood Springs, St. Mary in Walsenburg, St. Joseph in Grand Junction, St. Columba in Durango, Christ the King in Pueblo and St. Joseph in Monte Vista. He also served as assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Pueblo, assistant pastor at St. Patrick in Pueblo, administrator at St. Patrick in Telluride, pastor at St. Daniel in Ouray and pastor Sacred Heart in Paonia.

His priestly ministry also included an appointment as a temporary chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Del Norte and later chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. He retired from active ministry on July 1, 1986.

Survivors include his niece, Diana L. McGuire and her children, Erin McGuire Lee, Patrick McGuire and Shawn McGuire, all of Indianapolis, IN; niece and nephew, Tucker and Liz Cheadle, of California; and many friends.

A visitation will be held Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 5 - 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 a.m. also at St. Joseph.
