Vonita Mae Fettel, 89, residing on Finch Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 2:28 p.m. on Friday, March 3, in Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla. She was born on March 7, 1910, in South Whitley, Ind., to the late Grover C. and Blanch (Foust) Shorb, and had resided in this community since 1921, coming from Ober, Ind. Vonita was also preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Crouch, who died on July 16, 1995.

Mrs. Fettel served as secretary to Chief Gillen of the South Bend Police Department in the 1950s. She retired in 1972 as a secretary with the Traveler's Insurance Company following many years of service. Vonita was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.

On April 16, 1933, in Stull United Methodist Church, South Bend, Vonita Mae Shorb married Edward W. Fettel. She is survived by her loving and caring husband, Edward of 66 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Sue and Rollin Jump of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Edward and Anne Fettel of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Beulah Reihle and Rowena Foos, both of Billings, Mont.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 10, in Gospel Center Missionary Church, 930 S. 30th Street, South Bend. Rev. Thomas Bradford, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, and one hour prior to services on Friday in Gospel Center Church. Contributions in memory of Vonita Mae Fettel may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 820 E. Ewing Street, South Bend, IN 46613.
