Howard L. Nelson, 71, of 3115 Rue Voltaire, died p.m. Thursday at - Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He retired from the Bendix Corp. 

in 1970. Born on June 3, 1910, in South Bend, he had lived here all his life.

He is survived by a son, John Howard Nelson of Mishawaka; a granddaughter; four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Moffitt and Mrs. Alice Hawkins, both of South Bend, Mrs. Helen Martin of Light House Point, Fla., and Mrs. Olga Irgens of Wauwatosa, Wis.; and three brothers, Gordon of South Bend, Richard of Vicksburg, Miss., and Wallace of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hollis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave. Rev. John R. Parks, pastor of the River Park United Methodist Church, where he was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was a World War II Navy Veteran, a member of the VFW Post 1167 of South Bend, American Legion Post 284 of South Bend, and Elks Lodge 235.
