SOUTH BEND - Richard Edward Latson, 85, of South Bend passed away at 9:07 a.m. Tuesday, March 30th in his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Latson was born November 15, 1935 in South Bend to the late Clarice (Van Hulle) and Warren Latson and was a lifetime area resident. On October 21, 1961 in South Bend he married Lonnie Daniel who preceded him in death in 1996. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Judy Weaver and Wanita Neimier; and his brother, Warren Latson. He is survived by his sons, Daniel L. Latson and Jack E. Latson (Laura) both of South Bend; nine grandchildren, Katelynn Miller (Gage), Rebecca Latson (Tony Mohacsek), Van Latson, Ward Latson, and Jack Latson, Stephanie Claybone (Trey), Matthew Bauters (Shannon) Christine Bauters and Joshua Bauters; and his long time loving companion, Lula Shepherd.

Richard was a graduate of South Bend Central in1954. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy. He traveled the world defending our great country from July 1954 until June 1958 on the USS Waldron DD699 for most of his navy career. He was very proud of his naval career. In 1959 he began his Post Office career until he retired in 1992. After 6 months of retirement he drove his wife nuts. So she made him go back to work. So he did! He delivered nuclear medicine to local hospitals. He worked for Spectrum Pharmacy, which became Cardinal Health, from 1993-2014. He retired to continue traveling with Lula Shepherd. He was also an on call baby sitter for Daniel's kids.

He loved any sports his kids or grandkids played and was a fixture at many tennis, soccer and softball games. He caddied for Daniel and loved to play golf himself. In later years his son Jack joined him on the course too. He loved to go watch Rebecca Latson play basketball and volleyball. Richard was a huge ND fan and Cub fan but his heart was always with the Yankees. He loved the Yankees of the past.

In his later years he became an Amazon addict. Jeff Bezos is a little less rich because of Richard's passing. Richard will be missed by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. TODAY, April 2nd in the Palmer Funeral Home - Welsheimer Chapel, 521 N. William St. A graveside committal service with military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.
