SOUTH BEND — Anna Marie Marger, 94, formerly of Azalea Court and Notre Dame Avenue, passed away early Tuesday morning, Dec.21, in Holy Cross Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, following an illness. Anna was born January 2, 1910, in South Bend, IN, to Louis and Florence (Luther) Marger.She graduated from the former South Bend Central High School and the St.Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, and then attended Marquette University, Indiana University and Simmons College in Boston.She then was employed by the City of South Bend as a Public Health Nurse.

She began her nursing career in 1932 as a parochial school nurse and later became the supervisor of all Catholic school nurses.Her favorite schools were Saint Joseph’s Grade School, South Bend, Holy Cross Grade School, South Bend, and Saint Joseph’s High School, South Bend.

Although she had no children of her own, she was mother and father to her sisters, second mother to all her nieces and nephews, and always wanted all children to be healthy and to attain one hundred percent of their potential.During her career she practiced all types of nurs- ing.Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, cooking, photography and needlepoint.

She was a world traveler to places such as South America and Ireland.

Anna is survived by one sister, Margaret Whitcher of Orchard Park, NY. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. They include Mary Whitney of Roseville, CA, Ann Whitcher of Orchard Park, NY, and Jean Yarwood of Grand Island, NY, Robert Yriberry and Thomas Yriberry of Arequipa, Peru, and Catherine Cannamara of Gland, Switzerland, Margaret Weber and John Klaybor of Granger, IN, Mary Pajakowski and Jacqueline Klaybor of South Bend, IN, and Joseph Klaybor of Vandalia, MI.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Klaybor, who was buried the day Anna died, Catherine Yriberry of Arequipa, Peru, Geraldine Marger and Regina Marger; and one brother, Louis Marger.

She was a lifetime member of St.Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the St.Joseph Hospital/Holy Cross School of Nursing Alumnae Association where she was honored as “Alumna of the Year”in 1976. She was awarded the Sister John Francis Award for 43 years of nursing service.She was also the honoree at the reunion dinner for the Saint Joseph Grade School Opening of their new building addition.

Friends and family visited from 3 to 5 p.m.and 6 to 8 p.m.Wednesday, December 22nd, at the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E.Edison Road, South Bend, where a parish prayed the Rosary at 7:00 p.m.Services will be at 10:00 a.m.Thursday in St.Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, with Rev.William Neidhart, CSC, officiating.Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. Memorials may be made to Saint Joseph’s Catholic School and Church and to Saint Joseph’s High School.
