Dr. Joseph E. Lang

Dr. Joseph E. Lang, 52, of 505 Dixieway N., South Bend physician, died at 9:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Lang had been admitted to the hospital April 22 after he collapsed while making his rounds at the hospital.

Dr. Lang was graduated from the Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, in 1935. He (interned at St. Joseph's Hospital' and did graduate work in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

He returned to South Bend in 1946 after serving as a major in the Army. During his four years in the service, he had been chief of internal medicine at the Camp Gordon, Ga., Base Hospital. The late Mayor George A. Schock appointed Dr. Lang to a four-year term on the South Bend Board of Public Health in January, 1950.

He had served as president of the St. Joseph Hospital staff and was presented with a fellowship certificate in the American College of Gastroenterology in 1956. Recently, Dr. Lang was recognized for the stomach - freezing treatment of ulcers - a treatment developed at the University lof Minnesota Experimental Sur[gical Laboratories. He had successfully carried out the treatment in South Bend.

He was a member of the Zion United Church Christ, the Indiana Club, South Bend Lodge 294, F&AM, and the Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend. A lifelong resident of South Bend, he was born here on June 21, 1910.

He married Ann Slick here Nov. 16, 1935. Besides his widow, he is survvied by his mother, Mrs. Maude H. Lang, of South Bend; three sons, Charles, with the Army in Germany, and Joseph E. Jr. and John T., both students at Indiana University, and a brother, John A. Lang, of South Bend.

Friends may call from 7 to p.m. Wednesday and from 2 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday the Welsheimer Funeral Home. Donations to the memory Dr. Lang may be made to Joseph's or Memorial Hospitals.
