Gwendolyn M. Kaczmarek, 69, of 711 N. Ironwood, died Wednesday at the Cardinal Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1911, in LaPorte, and had lived in this area most of her life.

She graduated from the former Central High School in 1928 and from St. Mary's College College with a Latin degree in 1932. She graduated valedictorian for St. Mary's with magna cum laude honors in classics. She received her masters degree in English literature from Northwestern University in 1939. She began her teaching at Madison Junior High, and remained there for years, going to John Adams High School when it opened in 1940. There she headed the foreign language department until her retirement in 1974.

Her husband Peter A. died on Feb. 26, 1978.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Berenice V. Morrow of Mishawaka, and a brother, Jerome J. Kaczmarek of Indianapolis.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, of which she was a member. Rev. Michael Couhig, C.S.C., assistant pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the McGann Funeral Home, where a wake will be observed at 7:30 p.m. today.

She was a member of the former Indiana Club, the Morris Park Country Club, the Elks Club, the American Association of University Women, and the South Bend Alumnae of Saint Mary's College, of which she was president in 1979. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational group, and the Retired Teachers Association. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society.
