Dorothy E. (Gillmer) Smith

April 21, 1908 - March 5, 2005

Dorothy E. Smith, 96, residing on Kern Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Smith was born on April 21, 1908, in South Bend, to the late Frank and Lucinda (Weil) Gillmer. She has remained a lifelong area resident.

On Feb. 17, 1934, in South Bend, she married William Smith, who preceded in death on Nov. 27, 1968. One sister, Mary Gushe, also preceded in death.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church, South Bend.

Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Shuey of South Bend; one son, James (Myrtle) Smith of Lakeville; four grandchildren, Cindy Nemeth of South Bend, Phillip (Carol) Ryan of Coleridge, N.C., Susan (Larry) Heckman of South Bend, and Teresa (Andy) Thoma of Brookfield, III.; nine great-grandchildren, Michael Nemeth, Phillip Nemeth, Joseph Nemeth, Ryan Nemeth, Noah Ryan, Elizabeth Ryan, Chelsea Ryan, David Heckman, and Cody Heckman; and two great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ryleigh Nemeth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Rev. D. Richard Stuckwisch, pastor of Emmaus Lutheran Church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 7, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.
