Bernice Josephine (Whitmyer) Seaman

May 28, 1912 – April 22, 2004

Bernice J. Seaman, 91, of Anniston, Ala., formerly of South Bend, Ind., died following an illness on Thursday morning, April 22, in her residence. Mrs. Seaman was born May 28, 1912, in South Bend, to the late John and Anna (Klotz) Whitmyer, and had lived in South Bend until moving to Anniston in 1970.

On Jan. 17, 1936, in South Bend, as Bernice J. Whitmyer, she married Robert A. Seaman, who preceded her in death on Aug.18, 1982.

She is survived by a sister, Evelyn (Donald) Steele of South Bend; a brother-in-law, Dr. James Bernard Seaman of Alpine, Texas; five nieces, Susan (Joe) Wells of Newburgh, Ind., Liza Seaman Olson of Hudson, Ohio, Jan (Hilton) Robinson of Burleson, Texas, Barbara (William) Critchfield of San Pedro, Calif., and Suzanne (Frederick) Berry of Charlottesville, Va.;and by two nephews, Richard Seaman of Evanston, Ill., and Jonathan Seaman of Eureka Springs, Ark.

Mrs. Seaman was a graduate of South Bend Central High School. She was very active in the Army Depot Women’s Club, Anniston, and the Church of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Golden Springs, Ala., where she was a member. Her favorite activities were playing bridge and gardening. She will be remembered for her joy of living, and her thoughtfulness, friendliness and kindness to all who knew her. Her family and friends will greatly miss her.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 26, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Daniel Berger of First United Methodist Church, South Bend, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
