SOUTH BEND - Donald H. Smith, 79, formerly of North Portage Road, died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday in his home in St. Augustine Beach, Fla.

Mr. Smith retired as an architect in the South Bend area in 1987. He was the designer of St. Matthew Cathedral. He was born March 22, 1912, in Kewanna and spent most of his life in this area, coming from Kewanna.

On Oct. 25, 1947, in Mishawaka, he married Lois A. Mecklenburg. She survives with four sons, Rev. Douglas Smith, CSC, of South Bend, Daniel R. of Baraboo, Wis., Curt E. of Lakecomo, Fla., and Kevin H. of Sheridan, Wyo.; six grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Gindleberger of Osceola; and a brother, Cloyd D. of Pacific Palisades, Calif.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Mishawaka, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and was a veteran of World War II.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church at the University of Notre Dame. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc
