John E. Hanley

John E. Hanley, 69, of 333 N. Coquillard Drive, who served as a St. Joseph County commissioner for 12 years before his defeat in a 1962 re-election bid, died at 12:55 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical Center. He later was appointed a bailiff of the St. Joseph Superior Court, retiring about a year ago. Prior to being elected a commissioner in 1950, Hanley had served eight years as a deputy county clerk. He also had been in the insurance business.

He was born on March 12, 1912, in South Bend, and lived here all his life.

On June 8, 1935, he married Yolanda Keszei, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Michael and James, both of South Bend, and John of Louisville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Ayres of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Doyle, C.S.C., officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood. The parish and Council 553, Knights of Columbus, will recite the rosary at 7 p.m.

He was a member of the church, the Knights of Columbus and the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County Heart Fund.
