Mama – your mother’s love Was God’s gift from above You’ve now gone home Where the angels roam Minnie Louise Owens, 71, of 600 East Corby Blvd., South Bend, Ind., entered the house of the Lord at 7:55 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, from an extended illness.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1931, in South Bend, to the union of Zura Lovie McClinton and Howard Edward Warren, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Alfred; along with three sisters, Ruby, Cora Bea and Ella.
She is survived by a sister, Nettie McGaha of Youngstown, Ohio, and Howard Warren Jr. of South Bend. She is also survived by her children, Sheila (Albert) Ligon of South Bend, Robert Owens of South Bend, Keith Owens of South Bend, Dennis Moody of South Bend, Lovie (Theodore) Verstraete of Clarksville, Tenn., Lisa (James) Herron of South Bend and Linda Farmer of South Bend; 16 grandchildren; and by one special great-grandchild, Madison Nicole.
Mrs. Owens was employed by Saint Mary’s College for 18 years as a housing coordinator before she retired in 1993. She was also a Title 1 resource teacher’s aid for the South Bend Community School Corporation many years ago. She attended elementary and junior high schools in South Bend before graduating from Central High School in South Bend in 1949. She also matriculated at Indiana University in South Bend for about two years where she excelled in her studies. She had an insatiable love for reading and learning. This led to her academic success.
She was also a member of First Church of Christ Scientist in South Bend where she attended for some years. She also served on one of the church’s boards as well as working occasionally in the church’s Christian Science reading room. She was a person who had an immense passion for home and family, and one of her favorite avocations was working with plants and flowers. During her life, she spent many hours around the home with family members who domiciled with her throughout the years. She loved working in the home in support of the family structure. “Home was definitely where her heart was!” And last, she will also be remembered by her friends and relatives for her good heart. She would always be happy and willing to share copiously her pecuniary resources. This is one attribute of hers that will always be etched especially in the minds of her very close relatives and friends who knew her very well.
