Dorothy Lee Durand, age 89 died Tuesday, January 16, 1996 at her home in Knoxville, Tennessee from complications of osteoporosis. Dorothy Lillian Lee Durand was born in South Bend on June 28, 1906.

She was a student at the University of Wisconsin in the late '20s, a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and Phi Beta Kappa. She met Loyal Durand when she took a geography course from him, and married him in 1929. They lived in Madison, where he was a professor of geography, until they moved to the University of Tennessee in 1944. Their sons were born in Madison and Dottie Durand maintained very close ties with her friends here.

In Knoxville, she owned a fabric and gift shop, which grew out of her love of traveling. She operated the shop until early December.

She is survived by a brother, Edward Lee of South Bend; her sons Loyal (Bernice) of Madison, Philip (Mary), and Lee (Nellie) of Knoxville, and Kemper (Lillian) of Memphis; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Durand, former owner of The Torii, dead at age 89.

Dorothy "Dottie" Durand, a longtime Knoxville business-woman, died Tuesday at her Wilani Road home from complications of osteoporosis. She was 89.

Mrs. Durand owned and operated The Torii, a Kingston Pike fabric and gift shop, for 30 years. She was the widow of Loyal Durand Jr., a University of Tennessee geography professor. She had attend Depauw University and the University of Wisconsin, where she was an honors student and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Phi sorority.

Mrs. Durand is survived by four sons: Philip and Lee Durand of Knoxville, Loyal Durand II of Madison, Wis., and Kemper Durand of Memphis.

Following her wishes, there was no memorial service. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
