SOUTH BEND — Dorotha Paxton, 91, passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2010, in the Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend, Indiana. Dorotha was born July 25, 1919, in Stuttgart, Arkansas, to the union of Percy and Mattie Johnson, who both preceded her in death.She worked for the South Bend Police Department as a clerk and in 2004, she was honored for her 45 years 7 months and 29 days of dedicated service.The Civilian Employee of the Year award was established in her name.She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for many years but at the time of her death she was a member of First AME Church.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include a sister, Josephine P. Copeland of South Plainfield, New Jersey; a nephew, Robert (and his wife, Beverly) Copeland Jr., of Piscataway, New Jersey;two great- nephews, Robert (and his wife, Christie) Copeland III of Monongahela, Pennsylvania,and Jonathan (and his wife, Aida) Copeland of Piscataway, New Jersey, a great-niece, Lonnie Marie of New Orleans, Louisiana; along with a host of other family members, Erin, Samuel, Erica, Jared, Lydia, Shameka, Shamara, Shelia, Simeon, Lashaw, Shannon and Shawn.
Funeral services for Dorotha Paxton will be held at 1 p.m.on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Alford’s Mortuary, with burial following at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.Viewing will take place at Alford’s Mortuary on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
