John J. Harris

John J. Harris Jr., 68, of 1248 N. Twyckenham Drive, died at 4:04 a.m. Sunday at St. Joseph's Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a former South Bend councilman and a recent appointee to the State Election Board. On July 15, 1982, Mr. Harris was by Democratic precinct committeemen to fill a vacancy as an at-large member of the South Bend Common Council. He served on the council through 1983.

Mr. Harris was a long-time employee of Wheelabrator Corp., where he held a personnel services post. He retired from there in 1982.

He was born April 1, 1918, in Brownsville, Tenn., and spent most of his life in this area.

On Nov. 17, 1941, in South Bend, he married Allean Shipp, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Richard B. of South Bend; six grandchildren; and three brothers, Aaron, Oddie and Muncie, all of South Bend.

Services will be at noon Thursday in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Clark's Funeral Chapel.
