Ervin "Ike" Bierwagen

SOUTH BEND - Ervin "Ike" Bierwagen, 71, of 921 Wilbur St., died at 9:16 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Medical Center.
He retired from The Tribune after 37 years of service, serving 27 years in the Letterflex department and 10 years as security supervisor. He was born Aug. 9, 1919, in South Bend, and was a lifetime resident.
On Aug. 7, 1971, in Niles, he married Jane L. Schiele, who survives. Also surviving are a sister, Marie Ridens of South Bend; and two brothers, Bert of Niles and John of Buchanan.
Mr. Bierwagen was a member of the South Bend Press Club and South Bend Tribune 25-Year Club, and a former member of American Legion Pulaski Post 357. He was also a World War II Army veteran. He was the pitcher for the Bendix Brakes 1941 World Softball championship team, and a member of the National Softball Hall of Fame and Indiana Softball Hall of Fame.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday
