Richard E. Widup, 78, of Austin died Friday, August 11, 1995, after a brief illness. Dick was born in Logansport, Indiana, on March 23, 1917, to Paul and Lottie Widup. He attended Notre Dame University and served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, during which time was awarded several medals of honor, including the Legion of Merit, Soldier's Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, American Defense Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Berlin Airlift Medal.

Dick retired from active military service in 1962 and performed several civil service roles until he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in 1970, where he earned a Master's Degree in Education. In 1975, Dick moved to Austin where he worked in the State Comptroller's Office until his retirement in 1978 as Supervisor of Revenue Services. Dick was active in the Notre Dame Club of Austin, the Knights of Columbus and was recently named a member of the Edward Frederick Sorin Society of the University of Notre Dame.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, August 14, 1995, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road, with The Reverend Laurence Covington as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Cook Walden/Capital Parks.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Frances Widup, his parents, and his brothers, John and Robert.

He is survived by a daughter, Cecelia, of Edison, New Jersey; his sons, David, of Los Angeles, California, and Richard, Jr. of Severn, Maryland; and by seven grandchildren.

The family requests that contributions in memory of Dick Widup be sent to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar.
