Eleanor (Rodin) Firestein

Eleanor Rodin Firestein, a lifelong South Bend resident, died Wednesday evening, March 17, in Southfield Village. She was 86 years old and had suffered from a lung condition for several years.
Eleanor graduated from Central High School in 1935 and Purdue University in 1940 with a degree in bacteriology.
Also in 1940 she married Ray Firestein, M.D., who practiced medicine in South Bend, Ind., for many years and died in 1990.
Eleanor was a member of Temple Beth El, was an advisor to its youth group, and the Auxiliary of the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. She volunteered at the South Bend Advocacy Center, and as a reading tutor for children. She studied until recently at Forever Learning Institute, and was a lifelong bridge enthusiast.
She is mourned by her four children, Peter Firestein (Sheree Stomberg), Janice Firestein and Rose Firestein, all of New York City, and Judith Shroyer (Sidney Shroyer) of South Bend;.as well as by five grandchildren, Matthew and Lillian Shroyer, Eleanor Rose Firestein, and Sasha and Sophie Stromberg-Firestein.
Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Jefferson at Logan in Mishawaka, Ind., at 11 a.m. today, March 19.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County or to a hospice organization anywhere.
