Effie Marie (Nordin) Gish

Effie Marie Gish was born to William and Lillian Nordin on November 18, 1917 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She was an only child, and at a young age her family moved to South Bend, Indiana. Effie met new friends and became active in many school activities. She started a career in the accounting department at Bendix Corporation. She thrived at her job and voiced to management her objection that equal pay was not available to women. After her interactions with management, she was rewarded with equal pay.

On November 28, 1943 she married 2nd Lt. William Reynolds Gish. As an Air Force wife, she travelled to various bases, one being Sacramento, California. Subsequently, the couple moved to Chicago. They later moved to the suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois.

They had three children Barbara Gish Vest (William), Paul Gish (Brenda) and David Gish (Pam) with two grandchildren Daniel and Amanda .

Effie had talents of playing Bridge and enjoyed other card games with the neighborhood ladies. After her children grew up, she worked as a bookkeeper and became valued employee of FDC Company. Upon retirement, she volunteered as a Librarian at the Arlington Heights Senior Center where she loved reading, as well as traveling to many places with the Center. She attended Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights and later she became a resident of the Hearthstone Assisted Living at the Lutheran Home and Services. Effie died at the age of 105 at the Home on January 2, 2023.

She will be laid to rest at the Memory Gardens in Arlington Heights.
