Edward H. Merrill

Edward H. Merrill, 59, of 1250 E. Clayton, retired vice president of manufacturing for the Dodge Manufacturing Co., Mishawaka, died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Hospital after a year's illness.
Merrill retired in 1974 as vice president of Dodge Manufacturing after more than 30 years. He had held various technical and managerial positions in the company here and abroad. He had served as president of the Industrial Management Society and the Indiana and Michigan Industrial Engineering Society and an officer of Junior Achievement, the Congregational Club, Phi Delta Sigma fraternity, the South Bend Camera Club, United Community Services and the National One-Design Racing Association. Merrill also was a member of the South Bend/Mishawaka Area Chamber of Commerce, the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley and the Cathedral of St. James. Episcopal.
The author of several industrial, technical and management papers, he also taught in these fields. He held patents in power transmission and photography. An active sailor. Merrill participated in local and international one-design racing events, placing in the 1964 Chicago-Mackinac race, and was twice Great Lakes Area Champion of National One-Design. He was a Central High School and U'niversity of Notre Dame graduate.
Born March 1, 1916. in Saginaw, Mich., he had lived here most of his life:
On Aug. 31. 1968. he married Marietta J. Foust, who survives. Also surviving are three sons. Edward Ill of Orlando, Fla., and Christopher and Marc, both of South Bend: a stepdaughter, Mrs. T.J. Williams Jr. of Bolingbrook. Ill., and eight grandchildren.
