Vernon Dale "Mickey" McArdle

Vernon Dale "Mickey" McArdle, 84, died Thursday at Sunrise Assisted Living Center. Born in South Bend, he retired in 1982 as music director from Cathedral of Immaculate Conception and had formerly been music director at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He had been an instructor in Sefert Music Scholarship Foundation and was a World War II Army Veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Dorthea J.; five daughters, Mary McArdle-Bir and Colleen Carteaux, both of Fort Wayne, Pat Laurenz of Harrisonburg, Va., Maureen Shea of Mooresville and Michelle Pratt of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine; two sons, Mike of Avilla and Stephen of Fort Wayne; four stepdaughters, Mary Angela Conner and Laura M. Eggers, both of Fort Wayne, Ellen J. Eggers of Sacramento, Calif., and Elizabeth A. Eggers of Atlanta; a stepson, Jerry E. Eggers of San Diego; 27 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

His first wife, Elouise, died in 1980 and son, Kevin, in 2001.

Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Good Hope, 7215 St. Joe Road, with calling one hour before services. Calling also from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 240, Avilla. Memorials to Masses, the church, St. Mary's Soup Kitchen or American Cancer Society.
