Major Stewart G. “Butch” Kramer

Major Stewart G. “Butch” Kramer, U.S. Army (retired), of Green Valley, Ariz., formally of South Bend, Ind., died Saturday, April 19. He was born in South Bend on Sept.17, 1916, and lived there until 1979 except his years in the Army.

His wife, Wilma Kramer preceded him in death.

He is survived by three sons, Stewart, Greg and Stephen of Dallas, Texas.

After graduating from the South Bend Central High School in 1935, he joined the US Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. He was promoted up through the enlisted ranks, beginning as a Private. On Feb. 1, 1942, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. On May 15, 1942, he was promoted to Warrant Officer and on Dec. 4, 1953, he was one of the selected few Medical Service Corp Officers promoted to the rank of Major. During World War II he served with the 2nd Armored Division.He was transferred from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning, Ga. when the 2nd Armored Division was formed. He was with the 2nd in North Africa, Sicily, England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was part of the 2nd Armored Division advanced billeting detail that entered Berlin on 1 July 1945. After the division was settled in Berlin, he was placed on detached service to the Army Biarritz American University #2, Biarritz, France. He returned to the United States on Dec.12, 1945.

On Oct. 31, 1955, he retired from the Army.

On July 7, 1957, he opened the Roseland Standard Service Station in South Bend. He operated the station through gas wars and gas shortages until Oct. 1, 1978. In addition to the station, he also owned and operated a school bus for South Bend of over 12 years. He was a lifetime member of the Retired Officer’s Association, VFW Post #624 of South Bend, the American Legion Post #66 of Green Valley and the K of C Council #553 of South Bend. He was also a member of the Computer Club of Green Valley and the Green Valley Chapter of the Retired Officers Association.

Major Kramer will be interred at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, Tucson, Ariz. The Heather Mortuary, Tucson, is handling arrangements
