Joseph F. Hartzer

Joseph F. Hartzer, 82, formerly of South Bend, Ind., died after an extended illness on Dec. 14, 1999, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Born in South Bend on May 5, 1917, he was the son of Joseph F. Hartzer, Sr., and Illa Belle Demasse.
Having attended St. Patrick Catholic School, he graduated from South Bend Central High School, and in 1970 from the University of Notre Dame. During World War II he flew air transports and bombers in the Pacific as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps.
In 1947 he married Dorothy Elise Corcoran of Jacksonville, the couple moving there permanently in 1950. His profession was in the fields of insurance and real estate. A Catholic, he was a family man and a lover of the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James E. of South Bend in 1988, and by his wife in 1995.
He is survived by his sister, Pat of Wheeling, W.V.; two sons, Jeff of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jonathan of Jacksonville; two grandsons; a brother-in-law, Thomas G. Wack of Wheeling; a sister-in-law, Betty Hartzer of South Bend; and by two nephews, Timothy J. Hartzer of Albuquerque and Craig Hartzer of Greenwood, Ind.
He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville
