SOUTH BEND - Homer Jackson "Jack" Fassnacht, 93, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010, in his home at Inwood Hills Estates. He was born February 16, 1917, in South Bend, IN, to the late Homer and Ethel (Jackson) Fassnacht. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Kessler) Fassnacht, and his sister, Lois Haber of South Bend.

Jack and Margaret were married on October 12, 1940, at her home in Morocco, IN. Three children, Kathryn (Robert) Thomas of Cape Coral, FL, Cynthia Jean (David) Toleman of Knoxville, MD, and Marie Walker of Apex, NC, survive him. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Christopher and Zachary Toleman, and Matthew and Kaitlin Walker; his brother, William Christopher; his sister, Jean (Bill) Sherman; his brother-in-law, Lewis Haber; and his dear friend, Betty Shumaker.

Jack graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1935 and attended Purdue University before serving in the US Army during World War II.

He worked at Indiana Lumber Co., the family business, and was later self-employed as a sales representative for several companies. He was a member of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge #45 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend, First United Methodist Church, The Elkhart Dahlia Society, and Big Brothers of Berrien County. Jack was a loving and loved husband, father and friend.

He took great pleasure in his quiet secluded home on the St. Joseph River near Niles where he lived for 58 years. After his retirement he and Margaret loved to travel throughout the U.S. as well as visit their children. One of his hobbies and great joys was his flower garden, particularly his dahlias, in which he took great pride and enjoyed sharing with friends. Jack also enjoyed stamp collecting and updating both the Fassnacht and Jackson genealogies, which kept him in contact with distant family members.

A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life will be held Friday, November 12th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Mary Hubbard officiating. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory. His ashes will be interred next to his beloved wife in Morocco, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 333 N.
