He was born on January 19, 1917, to Ross and Nayomah Fankboner in South Bend, Indiana. He had no siblings. Robert worked at Bendix Corporation for six years to put himself through Notre Dame University.
While he was at University, he married Ellinor Smallzried on September 31, 1940. Their first child, Suellen Ann was born on August 4, 1941. Robert graduated from Notre Dame University in 1942. Robert and Ellinor had three more children, Robert "Duffy" Mark, Christy Mary, and Daniel Ross.
The family lived in Marion, Indiana and Robert owned his own office supply business which he ran for 20 years before selling it and moving to Indianapolis. He then was the business manager for Winona Hospital until he retired in 1983.
His youngest son, Daniel Ross preceded hin in death in 1969 during the Vietnam War, and his wife in 1998.
Robert is survived by his children, Suellen, Christy and Duffy; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
