Alice Jane Tarnow of South Bend, Ind., formerly of Naples, co-founder of Martin's Super Markets, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999. She was born in South Bend on March 9, 1917. God rest her soul. Jane graduated from Central High School in 1935.
As Jane Cary she married Martin Tarnow in South Bend on March 21, 1936.
In September of 1947 Martin and Jane opened a neighborhood "mom and pop" grocery store at 1521 Portage Avenue in South Bend. Working together they built the nucleus of Martin's Super Market, which today consists of 17 / stores and 2,500 employees. Jane enjoyed her time working at the store immensely. Jane was a devotto her daughters Nancy Sue. She was an exmothers cellent artist, very interested in wildlife conservation and enjoyed the company of others.
She will be missed by her daughter, Nancy (Bob) Bartels and their children, Amy (Jim) Stoll and Rob (Ann) Bartels; her daughter, Suellen Leslie and her children, Mark Jones, Randy (Stacey) Jones; and her great-grandchildren, Andy, Billy and Bobby Bartels, Ryan Jones and James Stoll Jr.
Private family services have been held. Cremation took place at Michiana Crematory.
