Jan. 8, 1917 - April 6, 2005

Margaret "Marge" C. Howsam, 88, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, in Country Care West, South Bend, where she had resided for the past two years under the loving care of Val and Bob Nielsen. Marge was born on the Calvert farm, Portage Road, South Bend, Ind., on Jan.

8, 1917, to the late Corey and Agnes (Lobaugh) Calvert. Marge graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1935, and then attended the South Bend School of Commerce. In 1937 she was married to Kenneth Turney, now deceased. In 1953, in South Bend, she married Charles W. Howsam, who preceded her in death.

Marge was also preceded in death by brothers, Earl and Jay Calvert; sisters, Laura (Lagios) and Mildred (Pittillo); and a stepson, John Howsam.

Marge is survived by her daughters, Ginger (Jim) Moritz of South Bend and Kay (Russell) Panico of Bridgman, Mich.; stepdaughters, Ricki (Roger) Holderman and Edythe Feathers of South Bend; and a brother, George Calvert of San Antonio, Texas. In 1957, Marge and Charles moved to Bryan, Ohio. Marge was a member of the Eastern Star, and was a past Grand Matron of the Ohio Chapter. After Charles passed away, she returned to live in South Bend.

Marge worked several years at the former Roach Appleton facility in South Bend and several years at Inwoods retail store in downtown South Bend. Marge loved to purchase the many toys and games sold at Inwoods to thrill her 15 grandchildren with them, especially at Christmas time. Marge was an active member of the German Township Homemakers Club and was well-known throughout St. Joseph County for her delicious prize-winning pies that she loved to bake. Marge also had a ceramics business (Bluebird Ceramics) in her home after returning from Ohio. This gave Marge the opportunity to make many lifelong friends who were both neighbors and students. She also spent many hours teaching 4-H kids the art of ceramics. Marge was a lifetime member of Portage Chapel Church, now known as Northwest United Methodist Church.
