LONGMEADOW - Harold C. Blakeman, a longtime resident of Longmeadow, 88, passed away on January 29, 2007.
Harold was born in Flint, Michigan on February 15, 1918, a son of the late Bartley H. and Clarie C. (Congleton) Blakeman. He graduated from Central High School in South Bend, Indiana and was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he received his undergraduate degree in Business and a degree in Law and Commerce, magna cum laud.
Harold was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Longmeadow and St. Peters church in Springfield. He was employed by the United States Treasurer in Washington, D.C., from 1941-1946, and later worked for Prudential Life Insurance, in Chicago. In 1955 Harold moved and settled in Longmeadow, and was employed by Mass Mutual Insurance for twenty-eight years retiring as Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel in 1983.
He was an avid sports fan and loved the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Detroit Tigers. Harold took great pride in coaching the Babe Ruth league in Longmeadow for many years and he could often be seen walking around town with his dog, Teddy.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary K. (Bachtel) Blakeman, and two sisters, Winifred Blakeman and Marjorie Snyder.
He is survived by his seven devoted children, David M. Blakeman and his friend Joanne Huntley of Greenfield, Maine, Carol Weeks of Kennebunk, Maine, Mark E. Blakeman and his wife Kathleen of Longmeadow, John F. Blakeman of Avon Park, Florida, Steven Paul Blakeman and his wife Linda of Brunswick, Maine, Sara J. Duga and her husband Dennis of Woodstock, CT., and James D. Blakeman and his wife Essla of Brewer, Maine, he also leaves fifteen cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Blakeman's funeral will be held on Thursday at 11A.M. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 335 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow. Burial will follow in Longmeadow Cemetery . Family and friends are invited to the calling hours on Wednesday from 6-9P.M. at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Baystate Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice P.O.Box 9058, 50 Maple Street, Springfield, MA, 01102-9058 or St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 335 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow, MA 01106.
