Eugene Alexander Basker

Former St. Joseph County official Eugene A. Basker, 70, of 537 E. Indiana Ave., died early today in his home after an illness.
Mr. Basker was elected St. Joseph County treasurer in 1964 and served two terms in that office prior to being elected St. Joseph County recorder.While serving as county recorder, Mr. Basker was elected St. Joseph County auditor, a post he assumed Jan. 1, 1976. Mr. Basker often led the Democratic Party ticket in his races for county government posts. He unsuccessfully sought the Democratic mayoral nomination in 1971. His term as auditor was a stormy one, marked by controversy. Mr. Basker resigned that post in 1979, when he was replaced by Joseph Nagy.
Mr. Basker was born Feb. 19, 1916, in South Bend, and was a life-long area resident.
On March 5, 1942, in Crown Point, Ind., he married Hazel F. Condley, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Claeys and Kim Singleton, both of South Bend, and Annie Ferrettie of Mishawaka; eight sons, Joseph, Eugene M., James R., John, Tim, Tom, Chris, and Dan, all of South Bend; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Brosey of Hartford Woods, Mich., and Natalie Joseph of Concord, Calif.; and three brothers, George of Granger, Frank of Sebring, Fla., and Raymond of Providence, R.I.
A son, George, died Aug. 14, 1984, and a granddaughter, Ashley Leighann Basker, died Nov. 5, 1986.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd.
He was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral, Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553 and American Legion Post Pulaski Post 357 and was a veteran of World War II.
