SOUTH BEND - Kenneth Witkowski, born in 1926, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on December 28, 2008. On May 8, 1948, he married Mary Lou (Buysse), she preceded him in death on May 18, 2005. He was also preceded in death by a son, Garrett who passed away on August 4, 2008.
He is survived by his four children, Cheryl (Gregory) Willoughby of South Bend, Sandra Witkowski of Key West, FL, Kenneth (Holly) Witkowski of North Liberty and Lee Witkowski of Sacramento, CA; six grandchildren, Mathew (Kelly) Willoughby, Adam, Alex and Michael Witkowski, Jessica Zloza, and Tyler Tischler; three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Witkowski, Kendra and Makayla Willoughby; and by two brothers, Clifford (Josephine) and Jim (Joan) Witkowski.
Kenneth was a lifelong South Bend resident. He graduated from South Bend Central High School where he played football. He served during World War II in the United States Navy. Ken returned to South Bend after completing his military service and took a job as a foreman at Studebaker Automotive.
After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Mary Lou, he began a family. Kenneth left Studebaker and became a successful business owner. Kenneth was an avid sports and auto enthusiast, Notre Dame Football fan, and V.F.W. member who enjoyed spending sunny days on the shores of Lake Michigan. Kenneth will be strongly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 3 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a funeral liturgy will follow in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 or to American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
