In Memory
Dorthy Lee (Shupert) Moon
June 16, 1926 ~ May 27, 2025 98 Years Old
Dorthy Moon, a devoted wife, mother and nurse, passed away on May 27,2025. Dorthy was a lifelong South Bend Resident, residing on the north west side of the city for most of her life. She was married for more than 70 years to Earl Grant Moon, originally from Lakeville. They met after WW2 when Grant was a patient at Memorial (then Epworth) Hospital. After a couple of years they were married, from 1948 until Grant’s passing in 2019. They are survived by sons Patrick and his wife Rita, Phil and his wife Carol. She also has two granddaughters Rebecca Moon and Andrea (Moon) Verteramo, and her husband Franco with 6 great grandchildren Maria, Domenic, Regina, Lucia, Gabriella and Rosa. Her nieces and nephews are Craig Mitchell, Terry Mitchell, Susan Wheeler and Lori Gerhard. Dorthy was preceded in death by Grant, her parents Clell and Blanche Shupert and her sister Marilyn.
A graduate of Central High School, Dorthy enrolled in the nursing school at Epworth Hospital, graduating in 1946. Over the next 40 years she practiced nursing at Memorial Hospital in the pediatrics ward and as a nurse at one of the area’s top obstetrics practices. When not nursing or raising her sons, Dorthy was an accomplished golfer, bridge player and and expert at knitting and embroidery.
Dorthy and Grant were avid travelers. In the early 60’s the family traveled to Washington DC and Gettysburg. They also had various trips to many parts of Michigan and to Florida. Dorthy and Grant had other adventures, including Hawaii, golf trips to South Carolina, Puerto Rico and others. They also once took the Southwest Chief Amtrak train from Niles Michigan to Southern California.
Dorthy (also known as Dottie to her old friends) was greatly appreciated for her kindness, generosity, and lifelong friendships. She’s now reunited with Grant in heaven where the golf carts are always charged, shopping is free, gooseberry pies are plentiful and there are no peas.
Her final resting place will be the Fort Custer National Cemetery next to Grant who has been waiting for her for 5 years.
