Rita Virginia (Gembarzewski) Konkol

Oct. 20, 1926 – July 17, 2003

Rita Virginia Konkol, 76, of Regency Place of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Thursday, July 17, in the nursing home. Rita was born on Oct. 20, 1926, in South Bend, to the late John and Wanda (Chrzanowski) Gembarzewski. She retired from Michiana Community Hospital as a medical transcriptionist.

On May 3, 1947, Rita married Edwin L. Konkol, who preceded her in death in August 1990. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dolores Fritz.

She is survived by her children, Linda Buchalo of Elmhurst, Ill., Kenneth (Kathy) Konkol of Homestead, Fla., Mary (Richard) Buczek of South Bend, Michael Konkol of San Diego, Calif., Margaret (James) Huntine of Columbia City, Ind., Barbara (James) Balbo of Camden, Mich., Jeanne (Daniel) Reed of Orlando, Fla., and John (Melissa) Konkol of South Bend; grandchildren, Andrew Buchalo, Kenneth Jr., Matthew, Zachary and Joshua Konkol, Kathryn and Benjamin Buczek, Michael and Andrew Huntine, John Paul, Luke and Nicholas Balbo, Danielle, Emily and Hannah Reed, Joshua Hatala and Justin Konkol; great-grandchildren, Mason and Cassandra Konkol; and by her sister, Loretta Budzinski of South Bend.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 21, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be held at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, in Holy Family Catholic Church, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Rita graduated from Central High School and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
