Eunice C. (Lauber) Holmes

Eunice C. Holmes, 90, of Southfield Village in South Bend, died Oct. 26, 2005. Mrs. Holmes resided for many years on North Scott Street and more recently at Park Jefferson Apartments. Mrs. Holmes was born in South Bend on May 16, 1915, to Joseph C. and Emma R. Lauber. Joseph C. Lauber was a well-known South Bend businessman and founded J.C. Lauber Sheet Metal and Roofing Company on East LaSalle Street.

She graduated from Central High School in June 1933, and from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois in 1937, with a bachelor in arts degree. She was a substitute teacher in various public and Catholic schools until April 20, 1939, when she married Howard J. Holmes of South Bend, who died July 26, 1962. He was the owner of Julia E. Holmes Silver Salon and after his death, Mrs. Holmes continued the business as a bridal registry at 229 North Michigan Street until 1969, when downtown development took the property.

Surviving are a son, David R. Holmes (Janice) of Bremen, Indiana, and a daughter, Carolyn M. Rodefer of Mishawaka, Indiana. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Lisa Muhligan (Matt) of Mishawaka, Rick Rodefer of Elkhart, Rob Rodefer (Gina) of Granger, Dan Holmes of Bremen, Jennifer Holmes of Bremen and Jill Snyder (Ted) of Bremen; and six greatgrandchildren, Sidney Rodefer, Nathan Rodefer, Haley Snyder, Matthew Snyder, Lily Snyder and Jessica Holmes.

Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.

She was formerly a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Altar and Rosary Society and Service Guild and currently a member of St. Anthony's Church and the Harvest House.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place. The HICKEY Funeral Homes & Cremation service, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., is in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association
