LELAND G. KORKHOUSE

March 24, 1915 - Aug. 9, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Leland George Korkhouse, 97, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2012, in Healthwin Specialized Care. He was born March 24, 1915, in South Bend, to the late Clara (Hein) and Frederick Korkhouse, and was a lifetime area resident.

On September 14, 1940, he married the former Virginia Mann, and they spent 54 years together before her death in 1993.

Leland is survived by his son, David Korkhouse (Cinda) of Granger, IN; grandchildren, Keri Hale (Brad) and Kyle Korkhouse (Robyn) of Indianapolis, IN; and great-granddaughter, Kyra. He was a proud graduate of the former South Bend Central High School and was a retired railway postal employee.

Leland was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and retired as a member of the Army Reserves.

He loved to attend music activities at Clay High School and donated his "recycling funds" to St. Margaret's House or South Bend Turners.

The family wishes to extend a grateful thank you to all the wonderful caregivers at Healthwin Specialized Care Facility and the hospice professionals who gave him special attention. There will be no visitation and private family graveside services with military honors will be held at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, MI. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home and Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
