STURGIS - Esther Blythe Nering, 83, of 418 Susan Ave., died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday in Sturgis Hospital. Mrs. Nering was a retired registered nurse. She and her husband were licensed foster parents, both in Michigan and Indiana, for 30 years. She also was a writer and poet. She was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Sturgis and was a lifelong resident.

On Jan. 5, 1935, in South Bend, she married Edwin L. Nering. He died Oct. 26, 1985.

Surviving are a daughter, Lois Wren of Los Angeles; grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Mary A. Vallier of Quincy, Mass. A son, David, preceded her in death. She was a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church, South Bend, a past president of the Sturgis Women's Club and a member of Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid, American Legion Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, American Association of Retired Persons and Thurston Woods Village Board.

She and her husband were active in Boy Scouts of America. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at HackmanFoglesong Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Newo District Boy Scouts or the church.
