Karl Grant King Jr.

Karl G. King Jr., 60, president and chairman of the board of Office Engineers Inc. and prominent civic leader, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Hospital. He had been ill since March.

In 1974 Mayor Jerry J. Miller named King chairman of the River Bend Plaza Advisory Committee which assists the Plaza Authority. Former mayor Lloyd M. Allen, appointed King in 1970 to the South Bend Economic Development Commission of which King served as chairman.

Active in the South Bend Downtown Council, King had served as chairman of that group. King was also chairman of the board of the Credit Bureau of South Bend. As a corporate vice president of the South Bend-Mishawaka Area Chamber of Commerce, he directed retail and trade development activities in South Bend's central core and continued work in urban redevelopment.

A 1937 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he became a certified public, accountant in 1938. Until becoming president of Office Engineers in 1946, he was associated with the accounting firm of King and Crowe and was later a partner in the King, Easely and Co. firm. King was a member of the American Institute of Certifed Public. Accountants, the Indiana Association of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Accountants, the Alumni Association of Notre Dame, Michiana Watershed, National Office MachIne Dealers Association, Northern Indiana Historical Society, the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley and the South Bend Art Center. He also was a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Niles, Southhold Restorations Inc., Elks Lodge 235, the South Bend YMCA and a charter member of the Summit. Club.

Born on March 21, 1915, in South Bend, he married Jeanne E. Becker, on July 8, 1939. They lived at 1515 E. Washington. She survives along with a son, Karl G. III of South Bend; a granddaughter; a brother, George M. of South Bend, and a sister, Mrs. Patricia K. Hilgartner of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Joseph's Catholic Church. Rev. Paul G. Wendel. C.S.C., pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson, where wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
